Our Nursery Literacy and Sustainability Event was an exciting celebration that took place from Monday 21st to Wednesday 30th April 2025, themed ‘Read Around the World’: Bridging Cultures Through Stories. The week combined the joy of reading with the importance of sustainability, focusing on Oracy (oral communication skills) and Eco-Literacy (understanding and protecting the environment).

Each class explored a United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) through books and activities, fostering both literacy and environmental awareness. Classes explored stories that delved into these goals, such as "The Lorax" to discuss life on land and "One Plastic Bag" to learn about responsible consumption. Activities included creating kindness trees, recycling books and designing eco-friendly inventions.

Highlights of the week included an Author Visit with Kevin Payne, a Book Market where children exchanged second-hand books and World Book Day with a character parade. The DEAR (Drop Everything and Read) initiative took place over these dates too, to encourage daily reading, and a Bookmark Competition that promoted creativity and sustainability.  EY4 also took part in a special acrostic poem competition!

Across the school, children came together to share stories with one another, with our older children reading independently to our younger children to foster confidence. We were also lucky to have several guests across campus join us for guest readings both on Seesaw and in the classroom.

Parents were invited to a Parent Workshop on storytelling's role in learning, and children and teachers shared stories on the school radio, Dukebox.

The week was all about inspiring a true love for reading, building eco-consciousness and celebrating diversity through stories. It was a wonderful opportunity to nurture young minds and work towards a brighter, more sustainable future!
